Zweena has been dancing since the age of three and has a background in jazz, ballet,
and modern dance. In 1990, Zweena began studying Middle Eastern dance and has
been teaching since 1997. Zweena has studied with master teachers in both the US
and Morocco and has been inspired most by two teachers: Leila Gamal, of South Bend,
Indiana and Lucianne Estes (Asya) of Eugene, Oregon.
Zweena is a former member of Troupe Shalimar (Oregon), Cosmic Vaudeville (Boston),
and is director emeritus of the much acclaimed Troupe Taleeba (Fort Wayne, Indiana).
She has performed with ensembles and as a soloist at restaurants and nightclubs
throughout the US. In 2003, Zweena choreographed the Lyric Opera of Chicago's
production of Thais to outstanding reviews and, along with Chicago dancer Angelina
Genova, performed in the production as a principal soloist. Zweena holds a BA in
American studies from Wellesley College and a masters in education from Harvard
University.
